AN EXPERIENCE THAT
LETS US DREAM
With the vision of four generations, Villota is the answer to a family and collective experience in the heart of Rioja's vineyards.
NINE DECADES IN THE
HISTORY OF RIOJA WINE
Ricardo Pérez Pérez, of Riojan ancestry, returns to Spain after several years in Chile, and settles in San Rafael Estate, at the meander of the Ebro river inn Laserna (Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa).
His son, Ricardo Pérez Calvet, an agricultural engineer of a wide experience, takes responsability of the estate. Promotes and important recovery of the old vineyards and starts to make wine for self-consumption –a wine he keeps in the old estate house underground cellars.
In order to take profit from the grapes harvested in San Rafael estate, Ricardo Pérez Calvet and son Ricardo Pérez Villota, decide to create a winery together with Haro's wine group CVNE.
From this alliance Contino is born, a name that soon became an icon. The Pérez Villota family provided vine growing and the produce of their owned vineyard plots alongside the already famous meander.
80's and 90's
Viñedos del Contino consolidates, firstly under the management of José Angel Madrazo Real de Asúa, later on lead by Ricardo Pérez Villota with the technical and winemaking management of Jesús de Madrazo.
Since 2013, the Pérez Villotas disassociates from Viñedos del Contino. A year later Ricardo y his daughter Carmen create the firm Viña del Lentisco, with the aim to make the Villota range of wines.
The Villota range
The first two wines that we made, Villota Selección Blanco and Tinto, have achieved excellent reviews. As an example, the 94 and 95 points obtained by each wine from the 2017 vintage, respectively, in the Tim Atkin MW Rioja Report.
The family grows
With the push of these recognitions, in 2020 Villota presents its complete collection to the market. New wines with a new image.
